Anchored in Truth, Moving in Faith: The Remarkable Journey of Lakes Church

A Legacy of Faith: 140 Years of Transformation

In the heart of Lakeland, a story of faith, resilience, and community has been unfolding for 140 years. What began as a small gathering in the back of a general store has grown into a vibrant, multi-campus church that continues to touch lives and transform communities.

The Humble Beginnings

In May 1885, Rev. James Garlington McCaskey rode on horseback from Alabama to Lakeland, Florida, carrying with him a mission that would change the spiritual landscape of our community forever. With just 12 charter members, he established the First Baptist Church of Lakeland in a modest back room on West Main Street.

Pastor Aaron Burgner reflects on these origins with deep reverence: “I often imagine that first gathering—a small group of believers coming together in prayer and worship, planting seeds of faith that would grow into the vibrant community we cherish today. Their courage and conviction continue to inspire us.”

Weathering the Storms of History

The church’s journey has been anything but simple. From economic hardships to world wars, from societal transformations to technological revolutions, Lakes Church has stood as a beacon of hope and resilience. In 1930, the church faced a devastating challenge when arsonists first attempted to destroy their building and succeeded in destroying the entire church building nine years later in 1939—a metaphor, perhaps, for the church’s ability to rise above adversity.

“Throughout these changes,” Pastor Aaron notes, “this church has remained a sanctuary of peace and a wellspring of God’s unchanging love. We’ve witnessed how faith can anchor a community through the most challenging times.”

Innovative Ministry: Breaking Beyond Traditional Boundaries

The church’s willingness to embrace change while maintaining its core mission has been remarkable. In 1998, in a bold move that surprised many, the church relocated to a mall, opening unprecedented doors for ministry and outreach. This innovative approach reflected a deeper commitment to meeting people where they are.

“When we took the groundbreaking step of moving our church into a mall, many wondered about such a bold decision,” Pastor Aaron recalls. “Yet this move opened unprecedented doors for ministry and outreach.”

Growing in Vision and Impact

From a single location, Lakes Church has blossomed into six thriving campuses, each serving different communities with unique needs:

  • Lakes Church Auburndale (2018)
  • Lakes Church South (2020)
  • Lakes Church Cypress Lakes Village (2022)
  • Lakes Church Academy (2022)
  • Lakes Church en Español in Downtown Lakeland and Auburndale (2023-2024)
  • Wonderfully Made Ministry for Children and Students with Special Needs (2025)

A Mission Unchanged

Despite 140 years of transformation, the core mission remains constant. As Pastor Aaron eloquently puts it: “The same God who guided Rev. McCaskey on horseback continues to lead us today. The same gospel that transformed lives in 1885 still changes hearts in 2025.”

Looking Forward with Hope

The church’s motto, “Anchored in Truth, Moving in Faith,” encapsulates its journey. It represents a delicate balance between holding fast to foundational principles while remaining dynamically responsive to community needs.

“In a world of constant change,” Pastor Aaron emphasizes, “we remain tethered to the truth of God’s unchanging Word. While methods and approaches may evolve, our message remains rooted in Scripture and our mission remains clear.”

An Invitation to Community

As Lakes Church celebrates 140 years, it extends an invitation to everyone—whether you’ve been part of this journey for decades or are just discovering this community.

Pastor Aaron’s words resonate with warmth and inclusivity: “To everyone who has been part of this journey—whether for decades or days—thank you. Your prayers, your service, your generosity, and your witness have written this continuing story of God’s faithfulness.”

Celebrating 140 Years: A Testament to Faith, Hope, and Community

From a small room in a general store to six campuses serving diverse communities, Lakes Church stands as a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith. As we celebrate 140 years, we look back with gratitude and forward with anticipation, knowing that the same spirit of love, service, and community that inspired our founders continues to guide us today.
