Finding Hope When the Holidays Hurt

Finding Hope When the Holidays Hurt

The lights are going up. The music has started playing. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and Christmas will be here before we know it. Everywhere you look, there are reminders that the holiday season is here. For many, this brings joy and anticipation. But if you’re reading this with a heavy heart, we want you to know: you’re not alone, and it’s okay if this season feels different this year.

When Joy Feels Out of Reach

Maybe there’s an empty chair at your table this year. Maybe the medical bills are piling up, or the job loss is still fresh. Perhaps you’re facing your first holiday season after a divorce, a miscarriage, or the loss of someone who made every gathering brighter. The decorations that once brought delight now feel like they’re mocking your pain.

If this is you, please hear this: your grief is valid. Your struggle is real. And God sees you.

The Bible doesn’t shy away from pain, even during seasons of celebration. In fact, some of the most honest prayers in Scripture come from people who felt abandoned during what should have been joyful times.

Permission to Not Be Okay

Before we talk about hope, let’s acknowledge something important: you don’t have to pretend to be okay. You don’t have to paste on a smile for the sake of others. Even Jesus wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus, despite knowing He would raise him from the dead (John 11:35).

Psalm 34:18 reminds us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

God doesn’t distance Himself from our pain. He draws near to it.

Anchors of Hope

When everything feels uncertain, these truths remain:

1. Your Pain Has a Witness

“You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?” (Psalm 56:8)

God isn’t indifferent to your suffering. Every tear you’ve cried, every sleepless night, every moment you’ve felt like you couldn’t go on—He has seen it all. Your pain matters to Him.

2. You Are Not Forsaken

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” (Psalm 23:4)

Notice it doesn’t say “if” you walk through darkness, but “though.” Difficult seasons are part of the human experience. The promise isn’t that we’ll avoid the valley, but that we won’t walk through it alone.

3. This Is Not the End of Your Story

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

This present pain is not your final chapter. God is still writing your story, and He specializes in bringing beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:3).

4. Your Weakness Is a Place for His Strength

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

You don’t have to have it all together. When we reach the end of our own strength, we discover the sufficiency of His.

Practical Steps Through the Holidays

While hope is ultimately found in Christ, here are some gentle suggestions for navigating this season:

Give yourself permission to say no. You don’t have to attend every gathering or maintain every tradition. It’s okay to protect your heart.

Find one person to be honest with. Isolation deepens pain. Whether it’s a trusted friend, family member, or counselor, let someone walk alongside you.

Create a new tradition. If old traditions feel too painful, consider starting something different—even something as simple as lighting a candle and praying each evening.

Serve someone else. Sometimes helping another person in need can lift our own spirits and remind us we’re not powerless.

Limit social media. If seeing everyone else’s “perfect” holidays is adding to your pain, it’s wise to step back.

The First Christmas Wasn’t Easy Either

It’s worth remembering that the very first Christmas wasn’t wrapped in comfort and ease. Mary gave birth in a stable, far from home, surrounded by animals instead of family. Shortly after, Joseph had to flee with his young family to Egypt as refugees, escaping a king who wanted to kill their child.

The Christmas story includes hardship, fear, displacement, and danger. Yet through it all, God was bringing about the greatest rescue mission in history.

Romans 8:28 promises: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Notice it says “in all things”—not just the good things. God can work even in our pain.

You Belong Here

If you’re hurting this holiday season, please know that you belong in this church family. You don’t have to hide your tears or fake your joy. We want to be a community where it’s safe to not be okay, where we can bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” (Romans 12:15)

There’s room for both celebration and sorrow here. Your presence matters, whether you come with joy or with tears.

A Prayer for the Hurting

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come to You with heavy hearts, carrying burdens that feel too great to bear. We thank You that we don’t have to carry them alone. You promise to be near to the brokenhearted, so we ask that You would make Your presence tangible to those who are hurting today.

For those facing their first holiday without a loved one, comfort them. For those struggling financially, provide for them. For those battling illness, heal them or give them strength to endure. For those feeling forgotten, remind them they are seen and loved.

Help us to hold both grief and hope together, knowing that joy can return even after the longest nights. Give us courage to take the next small step, even when we can’t see the full path ahead.

We trust You with our pain, knowing that You are making all things new.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
