Hearts Transformed: Stephanie Pena’s Mission Story

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” -Matthew 28:19-20

Sometimes God calls us to step beyond the familiar, to venture into places where His love can flow through us in ways we never imagined. For Stephanie Pena, a Communications intern from our Lakes Church family, this calling led her to the Mexican Indian Training Center (MITC) for her second mission trip—an experience that would stretch her faith and expand her heart in beautiful ways.

Mission Details: Stephanie joined a combined team from Lakes Church and Broadmoor Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana, for a medical mission trip that would serve both body and soul at the Mexican Indian Training Center.

“And he took them up in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.” -Mark 10:16

God’s Love in Action

Each day brought new opportunities to witness God’s incredible work. In the medical clinics, Stephanie watched as physical needs were met alongside spiritual ones. It wasn’t just about treating ailments—it was about showing Christ’s love in tangible ways. The MITC students became beautiful examples of evangelism in action, sharing the Gospel with patients, lifting voices in worship songs, and bringing joy to children through simple gifts like coloring books.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10). This Scripture came alive as Stephanie witnessed the seamless integration of medical care and spiritual ministry.

Beyond Comfort Zones

For someone who naturally gravitates toward quiet spaces, this mission trip became a divine invitation to grow. God pushed Stephanie beyond her comfort zone, opening her eyes to His work around the world and teaching her the profound importance of truly learning about people—their stories, their struggles, their hopes.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9

Sacred Moments Around the Table

Stephanie’s favorite moments came during the evening family-style dinners at MITC. Each night, team members would intentionally sit with different people, creating spaces for authentic connection and story-sharing. These weren’t just meals—they were sacred moments of fellowship where hearts were opened, cultures were bridged, and the body of Christ was beautifully displayed.

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (Acts 2:42).

In these simple dinner gatherings, the early church’s example of community came alive.

Why Go on a Mission Trip?

In Stephanie’s own words: “It’s a great experience to see the work that God is doing around the world and to meet new people and hear their stories—to experience a different culture.” Mission trips aren’t just about what we give; they’re about what we receive—expanded hearts, deepened faith, and a clearer vision of God’s global kingdom.

“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
-Romans 10:15

Is God calling you to step beyond your comfort zone? To see His work in new places? To allow your heart to be stretched and your faith to be strengthened? The mission field awaits, and like Stephanie discovered, the transformation that happens within us is just a profound as the impact we make on others.
